  2. names in British motor racing, Moss never won
  3. the world championship. He was runner-up on
  4. four occasions, losing to Juan Manuel Fangio
  5. in 1955, 1956 and 1957 and to fellow Briton
  6. Mike Hawthorn (1929-1959) in 1958. In his
  7. early days he drove solely for British
  8. manufacturers before moving to the Italian
  9. firm Maserati, and then to the German
  10. Mercedes team, returning once more to British
  11. firms such as Vanwall in 1958 and later to
  12. Lotus. A bad accident at Goodwood in 1962
  13. ended his career but he maintained contact
  14. with the sport and in recent years has taken
